Un peu de français chaque jour!

Il est bien d'écouter et lire en français chaque jour.  Je t'encourage à lire pour 15 minutes.  N'oublie pas d'écrire le titre dans ton reading log.

Read 15 minutes in French each day

A great way to develop your child's French Language skills is Daily Reading en français. It gives the students "Input" such as vocabulary, sentence structures, expressions .... to give "Output" such as speaking and writing.

Students are encouraged to read 15 minutes a day as practice. During this allotted time, students can read ONE book at least 4X out loud.
In their French workspace,  there will be a google doc that will serve as a LOG to help them track their efforts.  The workspace is found in their Student Portal under JER-1FRE-13-1920.

French Books on-line

Some students are still working in Boukili (Link) but I wanted to share with you another online resource Reading A-Z. (Link)

Reading A-Z might be new to some of you so I thought I would share a few steps and features.

  • Each book is leveled, AA being the easiest and Z2 the most difficult.
  • Be sure to select French Leveled Books located on the left side of the webpage.
  • Once the student has selected the book they would like to read, select Projectable under the subtitle Book Resources to see the book in a larger view
  • After the student has read the book out loud at least 4 Times, there is a Comprehension Quiz  with answers provided at the end.

What can I do to help my child in French?

The most important thing you can do to help your child succeed in French Immersion is to show an interest.   Here are some suggestions for helping your child in French. Even if your knowledge of French is limited, it is more important that your child is practising and  thinking in French.
  • Listen to your child read the work they have written.  If you do not understand, then ask your child to explain.
  • Ask your child to tell you about French signs and advertisements you see in the community, online, in packaging arriving at your house, etc...
  • Read a recipe in French and prepare the meal together: - have your child prepare ingredients ahead to ensure they understand the French verbs (chop - tranché, grate cheese- râpé du fromage, etc...)
  • Encourage your child to listen to French radio or television (cartoons, sports, music videos, etc.).  You can try:
  • MiniTFO (Mini French Television Ontario)
  • Curio.ca/fr/ (search for French and choose the correct age-group in the menu bar to the left)
  • changing the language on Netflix (audio, not just subtitles)
  • Google search French TV for Kids and you will find sites such as KidsWorldCitizen (https://kidworldcitizen.org/french-cartoons-kids/)
  • Encourage your child to read to you in French:
-French library books
-Boukili (https://boukili.ca/fr) (Reading - Listen and Read)
-Lalilo (french) (French phonetics)
-Sora (https://soraapp.com/welcome/login/201613) (Sora can be found on the Student Portal - please scroll further down for the French section)
  •  Play the French version of a board game or video game or use an English version, but interact in French (Bonjour Monopoly! Salut Risk! 😆)

  • Play cards in French. Write down key sentences to use before you start.

Bonjour - Intro to Blogger (5e immersion)

Bonjour aux familles et aux élèves de la 5e année de la classe de Mme Verhoeven!

I hope everyone is doing well as we move past our very unique March Break. Please let your child(ren) know that they are in my thoughts and that we will still work together in this "new normal".

As a way of checking in and communicating with you, I will be sending emails with the blog attachment.  In the blogs to follow,  I will include ideas, suggestions as well as activities to support continued learning during school closures.

Lastly, I would like to say a word of encouragement - your families are in my thoughts as we move forward.  The goal should not to be to create a classroom climate in your homes but to prioritize the physical, mental and emotional health of everyone in your family.  There will be surely difficult times - but we are a strong community.  Let's lean on our Catholic values of collaboration, generosity and love.
